Ilima's Story

There was never a time when Ilima Montoya didn't know the meaning of the word cancer. Her first diagnosis came when she was just an infant; the second diagnosis left her blind in one eye. But, Ilima persevered.

At the early age of five months, Ilima was diagnosed with a type of cancer called neuroblastoma, which had spread to her liver, lungs and brain.

Thankfully, Ilima was able to remain at home in Hawaii with family and friends, cared for by the talented team of doctors and nurses at the Kapi'olani Children's Blood and Cancer Center.

Following surgery to remove the main tumor, Ilima underwent six months of intensive chemotherapy. She won this battle, but her war against cancer wasn't over yet.

At age 3, she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Months of grueling chemotherapy followed, and once again Ilima triumphed. Although her bouts with cancer left Ilima blind in one eye and damaged her hearing, her outlook on life is positive.

In remission for more than ten years now, this sweet 15-year-old is thankful to donors like you who made a difference in her life and in the lives of Hawaii's children.
