Kapi`olani Medical Center for Women & Children is Hawaii’s only Children’s Hospital and High Risk Maternity Center.

A History of Community Support

Since its inception, Kapi`olani Medical Center has relied on the support of community members who value quality medical care close to home.

In the late 1800s, Queen Kapi`olani held bazaars and luaus to raise the $8,000 that was needed to open the original Kapi`olani Maternity Home.  In 1909, Albert and Emma Wilcox contributed $50,000 toward a Children’s Hospital in Hawaii.  Community leaders came together to match the Wilcox donation and on November 25, 1909 Kauikeolani Children’s Hospital opened.

The two hospitals came together in the 1970s to form Kapi`olani Medical Center for Women & Children.  Without any large land holdings or significant endowment, the hospital still relies on the generosity of the community to fulfill its mission of caring for Hawaii’s women, children, and adolescents.

Exceptional Medical Care Close to Home for Hawaii’s Women & Children

A pregnant woman in pre-term labor.  An adolescent in diabetic shock.  A toddler with an asthmatic attack.  In these cases, when every second counts, lives are saved because Kapi`olani Medical Center exists here in Hawaii.

In other cases, such as when a child is diagnosed with cancer or requires life-saving heart surgery, being treated close to home is simply better.  Families avoid lengthy, disrupting stays on the mainland and children and mothers are surrounded by their loved ones while being treated.  And in Hawaii, that seems to matter even more.

In each of these cases, families can be assured their children and mothers are being treated by some of the finest physicians and nurses in the country.  Exceptional medical care close to home.  Hawaii deserves the best.  Kapi`olani Medical Center provides it.

Donations to the Kapi`olani Health Foundation Fund Family-Centered, Quality Care

The compassionate and quality care provided by the physicians, nurses and staff at Kapi`olani Medical Center is supported in numerous ways by the Kapi`olani Health Foundation.

  • PATIENT SERVICES & PROGRAMS: Your support helps provide comprehensive patient services and programs.   Our family-centered approach to healthcare creates an environment in which women, children and their families can heal together.
  • CAPITAL: Keeping our hospital and its medical equipment up to date is critical to providing quality care in the 21st century.  Kapi`olani Medical Center was built in the 1970s but since then, the science and technology of medicine has improved at warp speed.  There is an urgent need to renovate and expand our hospital.  Philanthropic support of capital improvements at Kapi`olani Medical Center will remain a focal effort for the Kapi`olani Health Foundation in the coming years.  Hawaii deserves to have a state-of-the-art regional health facility for its women and children.
  • RESEARCH & EDUCATION: Your support helps fund vital health education and community outreach programs.  It also supports critical research in the areas of prenatal, neonatal and children’s medicine so outcomes are improved and new treatments are discovered.
  • UNCOMPENSATED CARE: As a mission-driven hospital, Kapi`olani Medical Center provides quality care to all who need it, regardless of their ability to pay.  Community support helps us carry out our important mission.
