Ronald S. Sutherland, M.D., F.A.A.P., F.A.C.S
Pediatric Urologist

Dr. Sutherland leads our pediatric urology team.   He is Clinical Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and has been practicing in Hawaii for more than 12 years.   Formerly the Chief of Urology at Tripler Army Medical Center and Director of the Urology Residency Program, he also serves on the medical staff for Straub, Kaiser and Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

Dr. Sutherland was born in Vietnam, the son of Christian missionaries and attended grade school in Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia. He came to the U.S. for undergraduate training at California State University, Sacramento. He completed medical training at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. After interning at Letterman Army Medical Center, San Francisco, he and his family went to Korea for a year of general military practice. His urology training took place at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Colorado, and then he completed a pediatric urology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.

He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the American Urological Association, the Society of Pediatric Urology, Society for Fetal Urology, European Society of Pediatric Urology and the Asia Pacific Association of Pediatric Urology. He is past president of the Hawaii Urologic Society and the Society of Government Services Urologists.
He is married to Suzanne, and they have 3 children.  He and his wife are actively involved in international medical missions projects.

• Children with behavioral bowel and bladder disturbances, such as constipation, encopresis (stool leakage), recurrent urinary tract infections and incontinence (wetting accidents). Treatment for these problems include behavioral modification and biofeedback (measurement of bowel and bladder functions to help children understand correct patterns of elimination).
   
• Children with complex developmental or traumatic neurological bladder and bowel problems, such as spina bifida, exstrophy, spinal cord injury, imperforate anus, and others. Treatment includes case management, urodynamic testing (measure bladder and urinary function), and treatment of incontinence and infections.
