Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children has a rich history of caring for families in Hawai'i that dates back to 1890 and the Hawaiian monarchy. From its humble beginnings, Kapi'olani has grown to meet the needs of the people of Hawai'i and the Pacific Region. Today Kapi'olani is well recognized as the leader in maternity, newborn and pediatric care and serves as the Regional Pediatric Tertiary Center. See our 100 Years of Caring for Children magazine.
Medical School Partnership
In 1968, Kapi'olani and the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawai'i at Manoa formed a partnership for the pediatric residency program, a vital and integral part of the hospital’s mission. Kapi'olani Medical Center provides financial support for the pediatric and OB/GYN residency programs, dedicated facility space, and clinical and administrative support. As an affiliate of Hawai'i Pacific Health, the state’s largest health care system, Kapi'olani benefits greatly from the combined strength of the four-hospital network, enabling it to continue investment in medical training and technology, and its facilities.
Innovation for Excellence
While the hospital is located remotely from the mainland U.S. and serves a population base of 1.4 million, innovation has enabled the specialty hospital to provide for nearly all the needs of the children it serves. Kapi'olani’s Pediatric Cardiac Team is a wonderful collaboration of Hawai'i providers and specialists from leading pediatric cardiac centers, providing a full range of treatments from open heart surgery to electrophysiology, right here in Hawai'i. Visiting specialists from San Diego Children’s and St. Louis Children's Hospitals gather for Heart Week several times a year to perform corrective and therapeutic treatments allowing families to remain at home with their support network for a faster recovery.
The success of this model of care is evident in the program’s outcomes, which are comparable to the nation’s leading pediatric cardiac centers.

Advanced Care Through Clinical Research
Kapi'olani is also committed to supporting clinical research to offer Hawai‘i's children the latest treatment available. The hospital has more than 190 active research studies. The pediatric oncology program for example offers more than 70 clinical trials — including treatments available at leading cancer centers across the nation. Other areas of focus include immunization, treatment for hyperbilirubin and infectious disease, to name a few. Hawai'i Pacific Health Research Institute provides support and coordination for these studies.
Advocacy and Outreach
The Medical Center’s mission to care and advocate for Hawai‘i's children does not stop at its doors. Kapi'olani represents the interests of children and their families addressing child safety and key health issues, including asthma, child abuse and the medically fragile. Most importantly, the hospital is the safety net for those families in need of assistance. In 2009, the hospital provided more than $1.1 million in uncompensated care. The uninsured and underinsured comprise 52 percent of Kapi'olani’s patient base.
Inpatient Pediatric Physician Team
Kapi'olani Medical Specialists is a multi-specialty group of over 100 academic physicians. The group works collaboratively with community physicians to provide comprehensive pediatric care. Specialists include: hospitalists, emergency medicine, neonatologists and oncologists. More recently, the group has expanded to provide outpatient specialty coverage in areas of community need, including urology, surgery, gastroenterology and orthopedics. More >>

Why Hawai'i? Medical Geneticist Laurie Seaver, M.D. relocated to Hawai'i five years ago from South Carolina where she was the Director of Clinical Services at the Greenwood Genetic Center. She joined Kapi'olani Medical Specialists and is the medical director of Hawai'i Community Genetics. As a geneticist, Hawai‘i’s ethnic diversity was appealing to her, “the ability to interact and care for people of many different cultures, especially those that I would not otherwise have been exposed to.” She also enjoys the year-round warm weather and beautiful beaches! Since moving here she has also come to appreciate Hawai‘i’s family-oriented culture and feels at home in the islands. More information on Hawai'i
